Youth Mission Trip
Summer 2011
From June 25 to July 2, Mount Olive youth and adults, joined by a dozen adults and youth from San Antonio, traveled to Alpine, Texas, where they stayed at Redeemer Lutheran Church. The members were wonderful. We helped with various tasks: from removing rocks from around the base of the church, to leading VBS with 15 children, and re-painting a trailer for a local doctor. The children of Alpine and our teens connected beautifully, and the church would like us to come back. On Wednesday and Thursday, we travelled to Candelaria, located on the Texas/Mexican border. This remote town had 50 families with no cell phone access, impoverished conditions, yet very beautiful people who are proud and happy. We stayed in an old school house next to the church. We built new swings for the playground, and we held VBS and dinner for 33 children. Various household repairs were made for the residents, and the youth painted the restroom building next to the school. It was so rewarding to see the children play on their new swings, and relate so well with our youth! We all felt their joy, and we felt grateful for our blessings. On Friday, we enjoyed a spiritual retreat in the Davis Mountains led by Pastor Carlos Boerger. It was a great experience! Please try to join us next summer on the Mission Trip!
